Girona once again demonstrated that they do not falter in big matches. In a grand setting like the Santiago Bernabéu, they secured a point (1-1) against Real Madrid, who were practically playing for the league.
Girona went to the Bernabéu with a clear plan: resist, close spaces, and wait for their moment. And they executed it perfectly. During the first half, territorial dominance belonged to Madrid, but Míchel's team managed to disrupt, reduce spaces, and minimize clear chances, with Paulo Gazzaniga very alert between the posts.
The Whites monopolized possession but lacked depth and rhythm, while Girona remained compact and comfortable in a slow-paced game, waiting for their opportunities on the counterattack.
The second half, however, altered the script. In the 51st minute, Federico Valverde put Madrid ahead with a powerful long-range shot that seemed to pave the way for a home victory.
Girona, far from collapsing, stepped up and, just eleven minutes later, found their reward. Thomas Lemar picked up a ball on the edge of the box and, with a great left-footed shot, equalized in the 62nd minute, punishing a poor defensive action by the Whites.
The goal had an immediate effect: Madrid became blocked, and Girona grew in confidence. The Catalan team managed the final minutes well against a nervous and imprecise opponent, unable to create clear chances beyond a few controversial actions in the box.
Even in the final stretch, with the intense atmosphere of the Bernabéu, Girona did not lose their composure. They competed, resisted, and earned a point that, beyond the standings, reinforces their identity and confidence. Girona's next match will be on Tuesday, April 21 (9:30 PM) at Montilivi against Real Betis.
