Mario Götze is expected to be left out of Eintracht Frankfurt’s squad for Sunday’s Rhein-Main derby against Mainz.

Hessenschau and Bild report that head coach Albert Riera has omitted the 33-year-old from his matchday group.

The move is not thought to be injury-related. Götze is reportedly fully fit, so the call is understood to be for sporting reasons.

He had already been an unused substitute in Frankfurt’s previous two matches, and this development takes him out of the squad entirely.

The 2014 World Cup winner is said to have been surprised by the decision.

With his contract due to expire this summer, the situation could cast fresh doubt over extension talks that had previously been reported to be at an advanced stage.
