Arsenal delivered an assertive display to dispatch Leeds United 5-0 at the Emirates on Saturday evening. The Gunners officially unveiled the anticipated signing of Eberechi Eze before kick-off and the new boy watched on as his teammates dominated. A brace each from Jurrien Timber and Viktor Gyökeres, along with a Bukayo Saka strike, sent Arsenal to the top of the Premier League on goal difference.
Despite the emphatic result and the buzz of Eze’s unveiling, injuries to Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard cast a shadow over what was otherwise a perfect day for the club. However, one of the biggest talking points was the performance of Viktor Gyökeres. The Sweden international finally opened his Arsenal account on his Emirates debut, scoring in open play and from the penalty spot.
The striker’s double came after he received criticism for his performance against Manchester United last weekend. He seemed to fire back at those critics with his celebration after netting his second. Speaking to Arsenal Media following the game, the former Sporting forward praised the atmosphere at the Emirates.
He said: “I think we started off well, had a couple of chances. We scored two in the first half, and I had a good chance in the first half that I should have scored. We just kept going in the second half, and of course, it was a great feeling to score early on. It was amazing to feel that support from minute one to the end. It gives you that extra energy to keep going and of course, to win 5-0 and keep another clean sheet was great.”
The clash also marked his first full 90 minutes for Arsenal after arriving without match fitness, having not played since May.

Reflecting on his debut, Gyökeres continued: “It felt good. It was nice to get 90 minutes, of course, to get the rhythm going and play with the guys even more. I think it was a good game overall. I felt good today, of course, scoring two and the team scoring five. I think that showed that we can be a massive threat going forward because we have a lot of great players attacking but also, of course, it is very important with the defending as well. I think we pressed very well today and did not give them much time on the ball. I think we deserved this win today.”
The Swede’s first goal highlighted exactly what he brings to Arsenal: pace, directness, intelligent runs into the channels and clinical finishing. Those qualities are why the Gunners paid a significant fee for him this summer. Following early criticism after the Manchester United game, the striker will be relieved to get off the mark and encouraged by a performance that could ease some of the pressure on his shoulders.
What did you make of Gyökeres’ first goals in Arsenal colours?
