Graham Smyth has dismissed talk that Leeds United are pursuing Sporting midfielder Hidemasa Morita. He said in a post on X: “The Morita thing isn’t a thing. No ‘advanced talks’, no talks, no interest.”

Leeds were first linked with Morita in March as planning for the summer gathered pace. The Japan international is out of contract in June, raising the prospect of a free transfer for an experienced midfielder.

This week, claims of an agreement in principle surfaced, followed by reported details of a two-year deal with an option for a third.

Such specifics can make a story feel advanced to supporters, yet Smyth’s intervention shifted the narrative.

Given his daily beat and reliable record on Leeds matters, his stance significantly weakens suggestions that a move is progressing.

Morita may still leave Sporting this summer, but the current indication is that Leeds are not pursuing him.
