Debate around Granit Xhaka’s Sunderland book value has centred on what Chelsea must pay. A bid around £10m would almost certainly not deliver a profit for the Black Cats.
Sunderland signed Xhaka in a package of around £17.5m on a three-year deal. According to Sunderland Echo, that cost is typically amortised across the contract, roughly £5.8m per year.
After one season, about £5.5m to £6m would be written down, leaving an estimated book value of roughly £11.5m to £12m. Such an offer would sit below that and could create an accounting loss.
An offer near £12m to £12.5m would be closer to break-even, though simply matching book value is not a profit. To post an accounting gain, the fee must exceed the remaining value.
From a pure numbers view, something nearer £15m starts to look more attractive, while a fee approaching or beating the original package would allow Sunderland to recover most of their commitment.
These figures are estimates, as the initial agreement may include add-ons, bonuses, instalments, agent fees and other variables that shape the accounting.
Crucially, this is not just about spreadsheets. Xhaka is captain and central to Régis Le Bris’ midfield, and Sunderland do not wish to sell or entertain offers. Only a fee too good to ignore would change that calculation.
