Granit Xhaka will be staying at Sunderland, ending speculation over his future.
The captain had been wanted by Chelsea, but the Black Cats always insisted he was not for sale, Sky Sports reports. He has now reaffirmed his commitment to the club.
Chelsea had tested Sunderland’s resolve. The Blues saw an opening bid rejected, with reports placing their offer around £8m against an asking price in excess of £30m. That sizeable gap made a deal difficult from the outset.
The pull for Xhaka was clear, though. He was initially attracted by the prospect of reuniting with Xabi Alonso, the new Chelsea head coach.
The pair enjoyed a hugely successful spell together at Bayer Leverkusen, winning an unbeaten Bundesliga title.
That history left him open to exploring the move. Alonso is understood to have been keen to work with the Switzerland midfielder again, viewing him as an ideal leader for his rebuild at Stamford Bridge.
Discussions with Sunderland changed the picture, however. After talks with the club, Xhaka decided his future lay on Wearside. Several factors proved decisive in that call.
Chief among them was the chance to lead Sunderland in Europe. The club’s return to continental competition, allied to their long-term ambition and upward trajectory, convinced him to stay.
His strong bond with the supporters also weighed heavily. Sunderland value him highly on and off the pitch.
The 33-year-old was named the club’s Player of the Season last term, anchoring Regis Le Bris’s midfield with authority and experience.
His decision represents a significant statement of intent from the club. Having resisted Chelsea’s interest, Sunderland will now build around their captain as they prepare for a demanding European campaign ahead.
