For most Gunners, Gabriel Magalhães is arguably the finest defender in the squad.

It is not just his aerial dominance or his knack for causing chaos at corners, it is the assured defensive play that now defines him.

Once criticised for making rash decisions, Gabriel has evolved into one of the Premier League’s most composed centre-backs, delivering calm and commanding performances week after week.

Underrated

The Brazilian’s current level is not getting the hype it deserves. Aside from his partner-in-crime William Saliba, Gabriel has been the league’s standout centre-back for two seasons running, and it is not even close.

Ever since Mikel Arteta flirted with the idea of cashing in and replacing him with Marc Guéhi, Gabriel has responded with a masterclass in defiance.

He has shown himself to be an elite box defender, a high-line commander, and a leader with real presence. His passing range, athleticism, and positional intelligence have become central to Arsenal’s build-up play.

And he is not done yet

Opponents should be very worried, especially after his latest admission.

“When you talk about the Brazilian national team, you have to work every day, work within your club so that you can get here in good shape. So, I know I’m doing very well, I know the level I can still reach,” he said, as transcribed by ESPN.

If Gabriel has not hit his peak, if there is still more to come, then the rest of the league should brace themselves. Fortunately for Gooners, that is a problem for everyone else, and maybe Piero Hincapie, Arsenal’s new man, will step up to challenge him for his spot in the team.

Mosquera stands to benefit

With Saliba sidelined for the next three to four weeks, Gabriel’s leadership becomes vital. He will need to marshal the backline, guide the exciting Cristhian Mosquera, and help Arsenal maintain defensive solidity through a tough run, including clashes with Nottingham Forest and Manchester City.

Thoughts Gooners?
