Sheffield United could face losing two key stars this summer

Sheffield United have endured an underwhelming campaign after their play-off final loss last year.

The Blades came within 90 minutes of the Premier League, but lost 2-1 to Sunderland at Wembley Stadium, leaving them in the Championship.

Chris Wilder departed in the summer and was replaced by Ruben Selles, but the 58-year-old returned in September after the team lost their opening five league fixtures.

The Yorkshire outfit are still on the fringes of the battle for a top six finish, but they will need an excellent run of form to close the gap to Wrexham.

Heading into the weekend, the Red Dragons were nine points clear with only 11 games remaining, with Sheffield United 13th in the table.

On that basis, it’s likely to be another year in the second tier and with that we look at two players who could very well leave Bramall Lane this summer…

Gustavo Hamer

Gustavo Hamer has been with Sheffield United since his move from Coventry City in the 2023 summer transfer window.

The playmaker has been a key figure over the years at Bramall Lane, although this has been a trickier campaign for him.

Despite that, he has still contributed double figures for assists from under 30 Championship appearances, where he hasn't always been the consistent starter you might've expected.

Hamer was linked heavily with a move to Leeds United last year following the Blades’ failure to gain promotion to the top flight.

While a deal failed to come to fruition, speculation has persisted around his future, particularly as his contract will enter its final 12 months when this season concludes.

This summer could be Sheffield United’s last opportunity to cash in on the 28-year-old, who they signed for a reported £15 million.

Since joining from the CBS Arena, Hamer has registered 15 goals and 23 assists from 105 league appearances, including four and six from 36 Premier League games.

Leeds had a £13 million offer rejected in the final days of the summer market, and they could yet reignite their interest in the upcoming window.

If Sheffield United fail to gain promotion, it would come as no surprise if this season proved to be Hamer’s last with the club.

Sydie Peck

Sydie Peck has emerged from Sheffield United’s academy system with a lot of praise and excitement around him.

The midfielder broke into the first team squad last year, making 42 appearances in the regular season before starting in all three of their play-off fixtures.

And he has continued to be an important part of the side this year as well, even if he endured some struggles under Selles.

It was reported on deadline day of the winter market that Nottingham Forest are keeping tabs on Peck as a potential transfer option.

While a move didn’t come to fruition, the Reds could very well move forward with their interest in the coming summer, particularly if they remain in the Premier League.

But even if the top flight club goes down, there could yet be plenty of other suitors for Peck based on his performances under Wilder this season.
