No fee was disclosed, and Sunderland Echo understands Sunderland will be protected financially should he excel at Peterborough and move on again.

Sunderland recently exercised an option to extend his contract for another season, yet had already told the youngster he was free to seek opportunities elsewhere this summer.

A boyhood Sunderland fan, Jones progressed through the academy and captained the U21s in the Premier League Cup final in May. He made his senior debut in February 2025, coming off the bench in a 2-1 away win at Sheffield Wednesday.

He trained regularly with the first team and was included in several matchday squads last season.
