Hedvig Lindahl has turned down a FIFA invitation to a legends match in Rio de Janeiro promoting the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, protesting, among other things, at the decision to give a FIFA peace prize to Donald Trump. The player said in a post that she is calling for a boycott of FIFA.

A week after first urging a boycott on social media, the 42-year-old Sweden goalkeeper, capped 189 times, accused Gianni Infantino of giving what she describes as a new FIFA peace prize to the president who bombed eight countries in 2025.

The former Chelsea keeper from 2015 to 2019 describes a joyful bond with Brazil and a wish to help advance the women’s game, yet believes attending now would only legitimise the award.

She wants FIFA to clearly condemn behaviours that kill footballers, citing the funding of a genocide and the genocide itself in reference to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Her post cites hundreds of children, men and women who love football being killed.

She left open the possibility of accepting the invitation if she sees change in the days ahead, though she doubts that will happen. The 2027 tournament runs from 24 June to 25 July in Brazil, with the final at the Maracana.
