Chris Davies’ side earned an emphatic, EFL-record 111 points on their way to clinching the League One title at the first attempt, which came after a summer of lavish and ambitious spending.

One of the big name additions the Blues made as part of their summer spending was Kyogo Furuhashi, who was signed from Ligue 1 side Rennes. The striker struggled during his brief time in France, but previously established himself as a star north of the border with Scottish giants Celtic.

It was reported that the Midlands outfit agreed to pay £10 million to sign the versatile forward, as they set their sights on competing for promotion again this season.

Here we use estimated figures from Capology to compare Furuhashi’s wages at Birmingham with what he was earning at Rennes…

Furuhashi made his name in European football with his time at Celtic, where he scored 63 times in 116 appearances in the Premiership before signing for Rennes in the 2025 January window.

However, he struggled for form in the French top flight, making just six appearances in the second half of the 2024/25 campaign, leading to his move to Birmingham.

As part of his move to St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park, the Japanese international agreed terms on an estimated weekly wage worth £35,000.

This has made him the highest earner in Davies’ side, with the 30-year-old coming in ahead of the returning Demarai Gray.

The winger rejoined the club where he first came through as a youngster in the summer, arriving as a free agent after his exit from Al-Ettifaq.

Gray is receiving £30,000 per week from the Championship side, and the two top earners have so far featured in each of the team’s opening nine fixtures in the league.

However, Furuhashi has only started five times, and is yet to register a goal or an assist.

Birmingham will be hoping that his form improves when the club return to action from the October international break, especially as they look to improve their form to close the gap to the top six.

Furuhashi was a key figure at Celtic prior to his January move to Rennes earlier this year.

He became a fan favourite with his goalscoring exploits, with a 27-goal campaign in 2022/23 in particular standing out.

However, he was unable to transfer that form with him to France, as he failed to justify the £48,083-a-week wages he was given.

He made just six appearances in Ligue 1, with only one of those coming as a starter, with the club opting to cash in on Birmingham’s interest just months after signing him.

Davies will be hoping that his struggles in France were just a blip and that he will rediscover his best form now that he is back in the UK.

It hasn’t been the best of starts for Furuhashi at St. Andrew’s, but it is still early stages of the season, so he has time on his side to show his best again.
