Leeds targeted Rodrigo Muniz and Harry Wilson in summer, their seasons have since diverged as Fulham visit on Saturday.

A few weeks ago Leeds were near Fulham, now five unbeaten league games have lifted the Cottagers to ninth. Marco Silva has been without Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi due to the African Cup of Nations, and both miss this weekend.

Muniz was Leeds’ leading striker target, talks took place and he was open to joining. Fulham held firm, with an expected fee above £30 million. Leeds pivoted, finding a breakthrough on Dominic Calvert-Lewin before ultimately signing a free agent who has scored nine times.

Muniz has endured an injury-hit campaign. He scored on the opening day against Brighton & Hove Albion, then played only eight more times before a muscle issue and a serious November hamstring injury. He is not expected back until late February.

Wilson was close to moving on deadline day, with terms signed and a deal sheet ready, before Fulham pulled out. “My phone was going off every two minutes. Then it was back on, then it was off,” he told Sky Sports last month.

He has since produced six goals and four assists in 12 matches, during which Fulham have lost three times. His future remains open, and he will not leave in January. With six months left on his deal, “This next contract has got to be right for me and my family.”
