The Owls boss has come under intense scrutiny of late despite the club's desperate situation

Sheffield Wednesday's season has been one of uncertainty and extreme frustration, with developments off the pitch at Hillsborough continuing to take up the limelight at the start of 2026.

The controversial running of the Owls on a day-to-day basis by former owner, Dejphon Chansiri, had left the Steel City club in a perilous position before the current Championship season even got underway, and the club have since been unable to defy the mass pre-season predictions of relegation to League One as a result of several factors.

For many, the writing was on the wall when a mass exodus of senior players was followed by the departure of Danny Rohl from S6, with the German enjoying relative success with Wednesday over an 18-month period, guiding them to a 12th-placed finish last term after initially steering the club to a 'great escape' from relegation in his first half-season after taking over from Xisco Munoz in October 2023.

Rohl's exit has since seen him take up the managerial post with Scottish Premiership giants, Rangers, following the dismissal of former Southampton boss, Russell Martin, at Ibrox, in October, whilst the Owls have remained under the management of former Danish international forward, Henrik Pedersen, throughout the current campaign.

The 48-year-old and his threadbare playing squad had initially become the subject of mass praise from outsiders in the season's early weeks for their conduct whilst Chansiri was still in the boardroom, leaving supporters to boycott a handful of matches in the Championship and EFL Cup.

However, whilst administrators, Begbies Traynor, remain as interim figures at the Hillsborough helm amid uncertainty over James Bord's proposed takeover bid, Pedersen is no longer getting away scot-free in the eyes of many Wednesdayites, with the club's dismal season summed up by their recent run of form.

As such, some have called for a change in the dugout, even though the Owls' fate has been sealed for many weeks due to the deduction of 18 points in two separate instances.

With that being said, as the pressure mounts on Pedersen, Football League World have looked at how much longer the Dane has on his contract, if it is to be seen out in full.

Pedersen's career in terms of playing and management has been rather intriguing, as he is best known in English football for spells with Bolton Wanderers and Hull City.

However, after managerial spells with the likes of Eintracht Braunschweig, Stromsgodset and Vendsyssel FF, his maiden venture into the coaching side of the game on these shores came when he linked up with Rohl two-and-a-half years ago to become assistant manager at Hillsborough alongside the vastly-experienced former Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town boss, Chris Powell.

With the duo departing the club in the summer, and the Owls' dire financial situation, the managerial baton was, rather unsurprisingly, passed on to Pedersen after he had also led the majority of the club's pre-season preparations amid a well-documented fallout between Rohl and Chansiri.

At the time his appointment was confirmed by the South Yorkshire outfit, the club, as has become the norm, did not immediately disclose the length of his contract at Hillsborough.

However, it was soon revealed by local publication, the Sheffield Star, that Pedersen had been handed a three-year contract until the summer of 2028.

That is, of course, if the future hierarchy at Hillsborough deem him adequate enough to be the man who can turn the club's fortunes around in League One, although some supporters are starting to question the Humlum native's managerial nous, with Wednesday still on minus points with 15 games of their Championship season remaining.

Understandably, Wednesday are on course to finish on the lowest points' total in Championship history. However, the main cause of recent frustration - aside from the obvious takeover uncertainty - is that supporters haven't been given the slightest of reasons to be cheerful when it comes to on-pitch matters.

Indeed, the Owls made it 10 matches in all competitions without scoring in Sunday's 4-0 defeat at Swansea City, with their last strike coming through the now-departed Bailey Cadamarteri in the 60th-minute of the 2-2 draw with Hull City on Boxing Day.

They could also be put out of their misery in terms of an official relegation as early as this weekend, depending on how West Bromwich Albion fare against Birmingham City on Tuesday night, coupled with a potential 23rd defeat in 32 matches on Saturday against Millwall at The Den.
