Chelsea visit Bayern Munich tonight to launch their 2025-26 Champions League campaign.
Chelsea have had mixed fortunes at the Allianz Arena in years gone by. It is, of course, the stadium where the Blues first won the Champions League back in 2012, but it is also the site of one of their more humiliating exits from UEFA’s competition.
They were dispatched in routine fashion by the Bavarians in the round of 16 back in 2019-20. The Blues’ away leg ended 4-1 in favour of Bayern, with Tammy Abraham’s effort cancelled out by Robert Lewandowski’s brace and further strikes from Ivan Perisic and Corentin Tolisso.
Munich went on to win the tournament that season, narrowly beating Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
Tonight’s match could prove intriguing for a variety of reasons, not least because Chelsea may be made to play against Nicolas Jackson, their Senegalese striker who is currently on loan with the Bundesliga champions.
They had hoped to call off his move after Liam Delap was injured with the transfer deadline fast approaching, but he eventually completed the switch after a conditional obligation to buy was inserted in his contract.
