The Premier League champions look to improve on last season’s disappointing European campaign

Liverpool launch their 2025-26 Champions League campaign in familiar surroundings tonight, hosting Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

Liverpool were beaten only once in the eight-game league phase, beating the likes of Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen along the way, but were dumped out of the competition in the round of 16 by eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain.

It came down to penalties at Anfield, with Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones both missing from 12 yards.

The Reds will hope for brighter fortunes as they host Atletico, but a better performance will be required than that which they produced against Burnley last time out, when Mohamed Salah scored from the spot in the 95th minute to secure a 1-0 win.

Atletico travel to Merseyside on similarly uninspiring form, with a win over Villarreal and draws with Elche and Alaves coming of their last three outings. The sluggish start to the La Liga campaign has seen them slip to eleventh in the table, though they are only seven points adrift of early leaders Real Madrid.

TV channel: In the UK, the game will be televised live on TNT Sports 1. Coverage will begin at 7pm BST ahead of an 8pm kick-off.
