Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho issued a bizarre response to criticism from Mauro Icardi.
Icardi, who plays for Fenerbahce’s fierce rivals Galatasaray, fired back at Mourinho after the Portuguese boss had posted a picture of Galatasaray defender Davinson Sanchez appearing to handle the ball in the box during the club’s win over Gaziantep.
“In the Handball World Cup that ended last Sunday, my Portugal brilliantly reached the semifinals and I want to congratulate them for such an achievement and the impact they will create on our country’s youth,” he sarcastically posted along with the image.
Icardi took exception to the comments, calling Mourinho “the crying one” in response, a reference to Mourinho announcing himself as “the special one” back when he took over at Chelsea.
And in a feisty back and forth, Mourinho has continued the war of words.
“I am sure that I am a special one, not the special one,” Mourinho said in a press conference on Wednesday.
“With 25 years of career and with 26 titles and not with one match. There is not one match to define my career. My career is a career of 25 years.
“In relation to the comments or the [social media] posts of Icardi, Icardi is a GOAT. I refuse to comment on a GOAT’S words. He’s too big, I do not comment.”
It is not the first time Mourinho has been outspoken since arriving in Turkish football.
He called Turkish football “toxic” in an extraordinary rant, claiming:
“I don’t speak Turkish but sometimes I learn words by repetition, I listen so many times to certain words and I learn them by repetition,” he said.
“Yesterday, everybody was saying the same thing. Scandal, scandal, scandal. I learn a new word. Scandal, scandal, scandal.
“But I think some of you like it. In this country, many people like it. Even the winners like it which is the worst thing of all because to win at any cost and to win in this way is the worst thing.”
He also took aim at Pep Guardiola after the Man City boss reminded everyone he had won more Premier League titles than Mourinho.
“Guardiola said something to me yesterday. He won six trophies and I won three, but I won fairly and cleanly,” he responded.
“If I lost, I want to congratulate my opponent because he was better than me.
“I don’t want to win by dealing with 150 lawsuits.”
And he has also claimed that he would not have taken the Fenerbahce job had he known “the whole truth” about the state of the game in the country.
