Alphonso Davies has endured a long ordeal at FC Bayern. After more than eight months out of action, the left-back recently celebrated his comeback – briefly, but emotionally. The Canadian only played a few minutes in the 3-1 Champions League win over Sporting Lisbon, but the moment meant a lot to him

After the game, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen described the outing as a „small, early Christmas present“ for Davies, while coach Vincent Kompany spoke of an „important story“. Now the 25-year-old himself has spoken about how difficult the time off the pitch really was for him

In an interview with Bayern member magazine 51, Davies gave a very personal insight into his rehab phase following the cruciate ligament rupture. The injury was a huge challenge, especially mentally. „Mentally, the healing was harder than physically,“ explained Davies, describing the gruelling uncertainty during the month-long break: „Not knowing exactly how long you’ll be out for. Not being able to play. Having to do the same thing every day… At some point, your mind gets tired and says: I don’t want to do it anymore.“

Davies fought his way out of a mental slump

The Canadian international openly admitted that there were moments when the situation pushed him to his limits. However, the decisive factor was how he reacted to it. „I said to myself: I can sit here and feel bad – or I can stay positive and fight. And that’s what I did,“ said Davies, describing his inner turning point. For him it was clear: „I knew that complaining was useless.“

Looking back, this phase taught him one thing above all: patience, a quality that he had hardly needed in his previous career, but which now helped him to sharpen his focus – not only on soccer, but also on himself The long absence ultimately „opened my eyes“, explained the Bayern professional. „Just being able to watch, not being able to play, week after week – that opened my eyes. Maybe I had to take a step back to see the big picture,“ said Davies

Looking ahead to the second half of the season and the upcoming home World Cup, the left-back now wants to get back on the attack and reclaim his regular place at FC Bayern. He is taking to the pitch with a new attitude. „I know now that I can’t take anything for granted,“ he emphasized

He continued: „When I’m on the pitch today, I give even more than I did before my injury. I’m looking forward to playing the sport I love, with people I like, being out there, fighting, winning.“
