The Cityzens won the game 2-1 thanks to goals from Vivianne Miedema and Khadija Shaw, but there was little to separate the two sides over the course of the 90 minutes.
When speaking to the media after the match, Jeglertz admitted that it had been a tough afternoon for his side, but the important thing was to take home all three points.
“I think it was a tough game,” Jeglertz said. “I think Everton, they were good today. We struggled attacking-wise, we created a couple of good chances and half-chances. I think that was great, but we struggled too much in our defending, so they played through us a couple of times.
“If you have high ambitions for the year, you need to win these games, there is no doubt about that. It shows something about the team that we managed to get three points, even though that it wasn’t the most beautiful game of the year.”
Manchester City have now won seven games out of eight in the Barclays Women’s Super League and they top the table. The Cityzens have enjoyed their impressive start despite juggling injuries and Jeglertz believes that much more is to come.
He said “I think that the challenge for us in this first part, even though we have been keeping winning, is that we’ve had a couple of injuries, players have been out and have been coming back. We have had a little bit of a challenge of playing with the same starting XI all the time. I think that this relationship is crucial for football. Since we haven’t been able to work with that so much, I think it’s only going to grow.”
The Manchester derby is up next for Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium this weekend. It will not only be Jeglertz’s first derby, it’s also his first time at the Etihad Stadium and the Swedish coach admits that he cannot wait.
He said “It’s going to be great, I’m really looking forward to it. It’s going to be fantastic to be in the position where we are right now coming into that game. Hopefully, a lot of people [will come along], the atmosphere will be great and yeah, I’m looking forward to it.”
Manchester City’s derby fixture against Manchester United takes place on Saturday afternoon.
