Paul Pogba (32) made his long-awaited return to professional football in coming off the AS Monaco bench for a 10-minute cameo at Rennes’ Roazhon Park. The 2018 World Cup winner took to the pitch for the first time since September 3, 2023. AS Monaco conceded a heavy away defeat to Habib Beye’s Bretons, who ran riot with Abdelhamid Aït Boudlal, Mahdi Camara, Breel Embolo and Ludovic Blas on the scoresheet. Mika Biereth reduced the deficit deep in injury time.

Pogba shared his relief to reporters in the Roazhon Park’s mixed zone. “I’m disappointed to lose, but in the end, it was beautiful.” The former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder was greeted by a standing ovation from the public. “The fans’ welcome really moved me. Seeing them stand up and applaud, I never imagined that. Thank you to all the fans who supported me.”

Pogba added that he was still a long way from being able to play a full game with Les Monégasques, who will play Paphos away in the Champions League on Wednesday. “I’m relieved to be back playing football, which is what I enjoy the most in the world.
