Liverpool have a real chance here to sign a proper £80m star. He's given a green light.

Anthony Gordon is reportedly open to a transfer this summer as Newcastle United battle financial restrictions. It’s understood, says the Telegraph, that they’ll likely need to sell a star in order to fund transfers.

It comes after a disappointing campaign on the back of a dreadful summer transfer window. Newcastle need a bit of a reset and selling a star for near £100m would make that happen.

Gordon, it seems, is open to being that transferred star. It’s something that will alert Liverpool, who tried to sign the Scouser back in 2024.

The Reds never actually replaced Luis Diaz on the wing, either, and Gordon would be a homegrown talent who significantly boosts their attacking options.

A deal is very possible, then. Gordon has given the green light before and is willing to do so again in 2026. This may well be the mega-transfer that boosts Liverpool heading into next season.

Anthony Gordon: Situation Summary

Newcastle Performance and Versatility

Anthony Gordon has remained a rare bright spot in a difficult 2025–2026 campaign for Newcastle United. As of April 16, 2026, the 25-year-old winger has recorded six goals and two assists in 26 Premier League appearances. His importance to Eddie Howe has been underscored by his tactical flexibility, often filling in as a centre-forward during injury crises. Despite his consistent effort and high work rate—ranking in the top percentiles for defensive contributions among wingers—Newcastle’s collective struggles have left them 12th in the table. Gordon’s individual form, however, has kept him firmly in the England senior setup, recently featuring in March fixtures against Uruguay and Japan.

Transfer Demand and Contract Leverage

Despite being under contract at St James’ Park until June 2030, Gordon is currently at the centre of a major transfer tug-of-war. Reports as of April 16 indicate he is "open to leaving" this summer to join a Champions League heavyweight, with Arsenal and Bayern Munich leading the chase. Liverpool also remains a long-term admirer, viewing him as a potential successor to the departing Mohamed Salah. Newcastle has reportedly set an £80 million valuation on their "crown jewel" to reflect his lengthy contract and homegrown status. Gordon is reportedly eager to have his future resolved before the 2026 World Cup begins in June to avoid distractions during the tournament.
