FC Barcelona are seemingly keen to strengthen their defense in the upcoming summer transfer window, and for this purpose, they are being linked with several high-profile names.

The Italian center-back Alessandro Bastoni has been the one most closely linked with the Catalan side. However, getting him will not really be easy, as Inter Milan would want a significant sum for their star defender.

As a result, the Blaugranes have reportedly been identifying some alternatives as well, and one such option has been the Tottenham center-back Cuti Romero, whose signing would become significantly easier if Spurs are relegated this season.

In such a context, SPORT reports that the links between Barcelona and Cuti Romero have caused unease at Inter, who had already begun planning for Bastoni’s potential departure. The Italian club is open to a sale but are holding firm on a valuation of around €60 million.

Barcelona, on the other hand, are reluctant to go beyond €50 million and could even explore lowering the fee further by including a player in the deal.

The gap in valuation remains a key obstacle, and Inter are aware that pushing too hard could drive Barcelona towards Romero, whose lower price tag could quickly shift the balance of the operation. This financial dynamic has introduced fresh uncertainty into what had previously been seen as a well-advanced transfer.

From the player’s side, Bastoni is understood to have already made up his mind about seeking a new challenge in Spain. While he will not publicly force a move, he is expected to communicate his intentions internally in order to facilitate an agreement between the clubs. Personal terms are not expected to be an issue, with Barcelona confident they can match or improve his current salary.

Romero, meanwhile, remains attentive to developments. Although not the primary target at this stage, he is aware of Barcelona’s interest and would be open to the move if he becomes the chosen option. His situation could become particularly relevant if Tottenham soften their stance, making the 28-year-old a more attractive market opportunity.

Barcelona are deliberately waiting for Inter to secure their league title before entering formal talks, hoping to negotiate under more favourable conditions given Inter’s willingness to sell and Bastoni’s desire to leave. At the same time, the Catalan club is maintaining flexibility by keeping alternative options active.

With plans for a busy and ambitious summer that could include several high level signings, Barcelona know they must handle this operation carefully. The coming week is expected to be decisive as all parties look to clarify their positions and determine whether Bastoni remains the leading candidate or if Romero’s emergence ultimately reshapes the club’s strategy.
