Interesting to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United losing 3-1 to West Ham.
The comments from neutrals especially telling…
A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.
The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.
Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.
On this occasion the politics almost entirely absent, concentrating instead on matters on the pitch and Newcastle United losing a match!
The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, some West Ham fans, plus the odd Newcastle supporter (and Sunderland fans, including those pretending to be Newcastle fans…) also contributing:
‘First half stats – 50-50 possession, even shots on target, Newcastle just marginally ahead on touches in the opposition box.
Even playing badly we’re still very much in away games, which is a good place to be. Second goal very unlucky.
I’m sure Eddie knew what he was doing for the second half subs even if it was bemusing to many of us fans.’
‘Outplayed over the 90 minutes and rightly lost. The game doesn’t finish after the first half.’
‘Or did they assume being a goal up after 4mins was enough to win the game?’
‘Howe has got to go. He’s lost the dressing room.’
‘It’s down the corridor; first on the right.’
‘Champions League affected Villa in league last season, it appears to be infectious!’
‘That was then worst performance I’ve seen us have under Eddie Howe.
Shockingly bad and West Ham cruised to that 3 points at a canter.
I don’t know what to say, we deserve all the slagging off rival fans and we can forget Europe next year. We’re a poor team right now. Very poor’
‘Calm down. They’ve played worse, they’ll rebound.’
‘Sunderland fan. But what has howe done wrong is pretty much the same team Newcastle just looked a bit tired.’
‘Games coming thick and fast. Need to adapt if they want to compete in the Champions Lge, Carabao Cup and EPL.
But not helped by at least half the team being involved in international games too. So no break for some players there.’
‘The Newcastle wingers had their chances, but their delivery was very poor. As a West Ham fan that made me happy, as dealing with crosses is something we’re hopeless at.’
‘Can’t wait for Shearer to analyse this one’
‘Maybe he’ll take over as manager again and get relegated.’
‘We worked hard for that. Pleased to see the right starting XI. Newcastle will be fine this season but that’s what we’ve needed, some grit and a bit of luck.’
‘We hit the post twice, had a penalty overturned and a goal disallowed by a toe-nail.’
‘Hitting the post is poor aiming, Thiaw clearly got the ball first so it wasn’t a penalty, and the offside was indeed offside.
West Ham didn’t have good luck and you didn’t have bad luck. You deserved the win. Simple as that.’
‘The West Ham second goal was a bit lucky. Botman blocked the cross, as he is supposed to do, Pope had moved to cover a potential shot from the cross, as he is supposed to do.
The ball wasn’t supposed to gently roll into the goal. That was indisputably lucky.’
‘From a Sunderland fan well done West Ham you totally outclassed Newcastle today and should have won by more.’
‘With the exception of Tonali and Woltemade the rest of the Newcastle side is about your average championship team level…’
‘Thoughts and prayers with the ref and VAR who did everything they could to give Newcastle the win. Come on you Irons!’
‘Fantastic win for West Ham, awful loss for Newcastle.
God did Mr Nuno Espírito Santo need that, West Ham’s fans will feel slightly better.
No fan of Newcastle but a huge fan of Eddie Howe.’
‘If it wasn’t for refs being swayed by the crowd at St James and allowing Bruno to run around kicking anything that moves and giving Gordon free kicks for his dives NUFC would be in the bottom3.’
‘(Forest fan) I feel sorry for the Newcastle fans who made the journey to London today.
A WOEFUL DISPLAY against a team who had forgotten how to win.
Well done to Nuno and his team. You go above us.
But a warning to Eddies boys.
More displays like that and you will hurtle down the league.
Absolutely pathetic.’
‘Why feel sorry for them, they wouldn’t have sympathy for you. Their fans are full of hatred and intolerance. Just look at the things they said about Isak.’
‘Well played Hammers
As NUFC fan, have to focus on a shocking performance though.
Did they think they just had to turn up?
So lethargic, yet no reason to be physically tired.
Was enough rotation mid week.
Mentally, just not there at all.
One of the worst performances in a long while and away form a big concern.’
‘That was a good team effort and performance from West Ham. They kept their heads up even though they conceded an early goal again.
Newcastle allowed the Hammers to get back in the game and looked rather lacklustre afterwards.
