The Dutchman’s goals had all come away from home so far this term, but after Erling Haaland’s early opener, Reijnders was on hand to blast us 2-0 ahead shortly before the interval, grabbing his first goal in front of the City faithful.

Haaland grabbed his brace with just over 20 minutes left to play in an important victory which sends us to the top of the Premier League table, one point ahead of Arsenal who could drop us back to second with a victory over Everton tonight.

“It feels good to finally score at home,” declared Reijnders in an interview after the game. “I’ve waited a long time for it, today was the day.

“Happy to win the game as well. A good assist [from Haaland]. He got the ball from [Rayan] Cherki and had to think fast to pass it to me then I could shoot it in. It’s new I think for every player who comes here. The tactics are different from my other clubs, the guys help me a lot with adjusting and I feel pretty settled here.

“We had to keep confidence and you want to win every game but with the right confidence and mentality, you can do it. It shows how much quality we have and how much we have grown as a team. It’s a good job from us and we have to keep going.”

Despite going one point ahead of the Gunners after the win, Reijnders was quick to point out that City need to focus on each game as it comes, with plenty of time left in the season.

“We have to see. We will keep the pressure on them [Arsenal]. They are above us, not now but before, we have to keep the pressure on. We all have to do that.

“We have to show each game that we have the quality and play without fear. We did that very well today. We put on a very good streak. For us we have to keep going. It’s not finished.

“Keep pressure on Arsenal and it’s a good time going into Christmas like this.”
