Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic were just some of the many players Bayern Munich had to manage without for their trip to Heidenheim on Sunday.
Despite the absences, Bayern won comfortably 4-0, and head coach Vincent Kompany was full of praise for his squad.
“I am very proud, because it felt like a week during the Corona phase. We have no Corona cases, but when the doctor comes, you’re always afraid – you know you might lose a player," said Kompany after the game.
“In the end, we had twelve experienced players; Alphonso Davies can’t really be fully counted yet. We relied on the young players, and the others did their jobs. I’m proud of how the squad handled it – it’s not a given to win 4-0 here under these circumstances. We didn’t make the most of our counter-attacks, which might have decided the game earlier.”
The win leaves Bayern nine points clear of Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga table heading into the winter break.
“We have a good foundation for next year. The titles will be decided in March, but the foundation is already there. Our squad will be strengthened again in January, at just the right time. Now we’ll take a break, and then we continue,” said Kompany.
