Jadon Sancho has revealed that Marcus Rashford played a part in his decision to join Aston Villa from Man Utd in the summer transfer window.
The Villans signed the winger on a season-long deal on Deadline Day. They will reportedly pay 80 per cent of his salary, plus bonuses, throughout the campaign.
Sancho is hoping for a fresh start following his disappointing transfer to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund in 2021.
The 25-year-old, who has been loaned out twice in the past two seasons, says that Unai Emery was one of the major deciding factors in his move to Villa.
“First of all, when I spoke to the manager, he gave me belief and confidence,” Sancho told Villa TV.
“He showed me the plan for this year, and it really inspired me. He definitely persuaded me, and I can’t wait to work under him.
“Wherever the manager needs me, I’ll be happy to play. I have individual goals, of course, but my main priority is the team.”
Former Man Utd teammate Rashford enjoyed a productive half-season loan at Villa Park in 2024/25, registering four goals and five assists in 17 appearances in all competitions. It helped revive the forward’s career, and earn him a move to Barcelona, something Sancho will be hoping to emulate with the Midlands outfit.
On the role Rashford had on the decision, Sancho added: “I spoke to him while he was here last season and I know he really enjoyed it.
“He said so many lovely things about the club, like how it’s a family and you feel that friendly environment with great players and staff. I definitely felt that as I came in.”
