A midfield signing is one Manchester United fans have been told they can look forward to.
Last weekend, Fabrizio Romano revealed that, alongside striker and goalkeeper transfers, plans are underway to bring in a midfielder.
A mobile midfield addition would be warmly welcomed at United.
There remains a lively debate over who should partner Bruno Fernandes in United’s engine room in Ruben Amorim’s strongest line-up next season.
With Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo arriving to take over as United’s number 10s, Fernandes is expected to drop into a deeper midfield role.
While the Portuguese Magnifico should comfortably slot into the deep-lying playmaker role, he will need a reliable partner. Someone mobile, capable of covering ground and plugging the gaps when Fernandes roams forward.
Valencia’s Javi Guerra looked like a strong candidate.
The 22-year-old is described as a physical, technically gifted midfielder known for his aggressive tackling and ability to carry the ball forward.
Reports suggested United had reached a verbal agreement with the player.
But soon after, fresh claims emerged that Guerra was not as keen on an Old Trafford switch as initially thought.
He was said to favour staying at Valencia, raising speculation that the exit rumours were a ploy to secure a pay rise.
While United fans were left wondering what to believe, the latest reports appear to seal the Guerra speculation.
If the young midfielder were angling for a new deal at the Mestalla Stadium, revelations by Cadena Cope suggest he has secured one.
The Spanish outlet reports:
“In recent days, the talks have continued, and at this time, the steps prior to the final signing of the contract that will link Javi Guerra with the Mestalla entity until 2029 are completed.
“Offers from Champions League teams such as Milan, Manchester United or Atlético de Madrid are left behind.
“The midfielder is committed to staying at Mestalla.
“[Valencia] are also making an effort to meet the salary expectations of the player from Gilet.”
Guerra is now another target off United’s wishlist.
Unlike his former teammate Cristhian Mosquera, who joined Arsenal, the opportunity to move to the Premier League did not sway him, nor did the lure of Old Trafford.
That said, missing out on Guerra is no major blow. INEOS have assembled a strong three-man shortlist in their search for Fernandes’ ideal midfield partner.
Morten Hjulmand, Douglas Luiz, and Ederson are, according to a report relayed by The Peoples Person, the trio United are now weighing up.They have also been linked with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.
With their experience and profiles, landing any one of them should erase the thought of missing out on Guerra.
