Jhon Lucumí given exit promise after Bologna blocked Sunderland move last summer | OneFootball

Bologna chief executive Claudio Fenucci says Jhon Lucumí was promised the club would consider a summer exit after they vetoed a late move last year, when Sunderland tried to sign him.

Sunderland targeted the Colombia international to strengthen Régis Le Bris’ squad, but Bologna declined to sell late in the window as there was not enough time to replace the centre-back.

“A year ago, we couldn’t sell him at the end of the transfer window, but we promised him that this year, given a suitable offer, we’d make it happen.” He was speaking to Pallone nel 7.

“The transfer window hasn’t really taken off yet, and if it didn’t for Lucumi either, we’d be happy to keep him,” he added.

The remarks could pave the way for a move in the current window, though any bidder would still need to meet Bologna’s valuation. Lucumí remains under contract and is an important part of the Serie A side’s squad, so the club are under no pressure to accept a cut-price fee.

Sunderland continue to assess defensive options, particularly left-sided and left-footed centre-backs, with Premier League, domestic cup and European commitments increasing the need for depth.
