J.J. Watt, the NFL legend and Burnley co-owner, has designed the club’s retro away kit for next season in the Championship and explained the thinking behind it.

According to L'Équipe, Watt said the first priority was to restore the old crest, which he views as rich in detail and tradition, then to weave in architectural elements from Gawthorpe Hall in Burnley.

The intention was a vintage look that nods to the great eras of English football, while keeping that sense of history at the heart of the shirt.

He felt the revived badge and local references worked together cleanly on the design.

Watt put the project timeline at between one and a half and two years.
