João Cancelo offered support to David Simão after the former Benfica midfielder announced his departure from Arouca on Monday.
According to Glorioso 1904, the 35-year-old revealed on social media that his second spell at the club has ended, and Cancelo, the Barcelona right-back and a recent recruit, responded with a reflective message praising his ability and noting that genuine people in football are often cast as villains.
Tiago Gouveia, who also represented Benfica and moved to Nice at the start of this season, added a tribute, saying Simão has one of the best left feet he has seen and that watching him in person was a pleasure.
Simão first played for Arouca from 2013 to 2016, then returned in January 2022. He was on Benfica’s books from 1999 to 2013, with spells at Académica, Paços de Ferreira, Marítimo, Boavista and Moreirense.
This season he has logged 658 minutes across 12 Liga Portugal Betclic matches, with no goals or assists. He is valued at 100,000 euros.
