Joao Gomes is leaving Wolves for Villa in a £38m transfer, comfortably the biggest deal between the West Midlands neighbours.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the Brazilian has left Wolves’ training base in Portugal and is flying back to the UK, with the 25-year-old due to undergo a medical before completing the move.

Villa targeted Gomes after Amadou Onana suffered a long-term injury, before Youri Tielemans joined Manchester United for £38m earlier this week.

Atletico Madrid had been strongly linked and Gomes was widely expected to exit Molineux after Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League, but that switch did not materialise.

Talks have also taken place with Bayern Munich about taking Portugal international Joao Palhinha on loan.

Villa are on course to sign Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi in a club-record deal before the end of the week. Right-back Andres Garcia has joined Getafe on a season-long loan.

Gomes joined Wolves from Flamengo in 2023 and has made 130 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight and setting up six.

Manchester United had also been credited with an interest, but Villa made the decisive move.
