Joao Neves has been hit by a wave of online abuse after post-match remarks about Cristiano Ronaldo, following Portugal's 1-1 draw with Congo.
Since the draw on Wednesday, abuse has surged, particularly under his latest Instagram photo, according to Le Progres.
After the game he acknowledged Ronaldo's historic impact for Portugal and for football, but stressed that, right now, Ronaldo is one of the group, another player there to help like the rest. He praised Ronaldo's display, highlighted the team's strong performance and emphasised unity as decisive in the long term.
The Paris SG player has attracted more than 25,000 hostile comments, far above his usual posts. Some users posted trophy gifs of Ronaldo, told Neves bluntly to keep quiet, or demanded greater respect for the Portugal captain.
He was not the only Portugal player targeted by Ronaldo fans. Bernardo Silva also received abuse, with accusations that he does not pass often enough to the team's top scorer.
The backlash has extended to Neves's partner, actress Madalena Aragão. She disabled comments on her latest Instagram post to avoid vomiting emojis and messages insisting Ronaldo is the king of football and must be fully respected.
