João Palhinha was involved in an alarming head clash with Cristian Romero during Atlético Madrid’s Champions League meeting with Tottenham, a first-leg tie in the round of 16.

The collision came on Tuesday, 10 March, in the second minute of stoppage time as the pair contested an aerial ball. Both received on-pitch treatment from Tottenham’s medical team at the Metropolitano in Madrid. Romero, the Spurs captain, returned to play, while Palhinha was substituted.

Images showed the Portugal international visibly shaken by the impact. The first leg finished 5-2 to Diego Simeone’s side.

This season for Tottenham, Palhinha, valued at €18 million, has made 39 appearances, 27 in the Premier League, eight in the Champions League, two in the League Cup, one in the FA Cup and one in the European Super Cup, totalling 2,499 minutes. He has five goals and two assists.
