Chelsea legend John Terry has issued a plea involving Manchester United star Harry Maguire after his sensational performance in the 2-0 victory over Manchester City.
Maguire put in a rock-solid display alongside Lisandro Martinez as United clinched all three points in the 198th Manchester derby.
Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu both scored in the first half to secure Michael Carrick a dream start to life as United’s interim boss. United created multiple goal-scoring chances but they were equally solid at the back, thanks in large part to Maguire, who was restored to the XI after a period on the sidelines.
He swept up everything on the ground and in the air and managed to keep the dangerous Erling Haaland quiet. The England international nearly got on the scoresheet early into the game but his headed attempt was thwarted by the crossbar.
After the final whistle, Carrick expressed his delight with Maguire’s contributions, while also admitting that the defender’s selection was a calculated gamble.
Terry took to social media to hail Carrick’s masterclass and to praise Maguire, calling for the defender’s recall to the England squad for the World Cup.
The 45-year-old said [as quoted by the Metro], “Wow what a performance from Man United. This is the Man United of old. Attacking, free-flowing football, pace up front.”
“Massive performance from Manchester United today under Michael Carrick. So good to see Carrick get his opportunity.”
Terry said about Maguire, “Man United is such a better team with Harry Maguire in the squad today, back playing.”
“I’m not sure there’s a more difficult game to come into. A Manchester derby playing against the best striker in the world in [Erling] Haaland.”
“He’s just so good in both boxes and so good on the ball as well. Saw him drive out with the ball and was so comfortable with it.”
“In this form, Harry Maguire has to be on the plane for the World Cup.”
Maguire and United are next in action on Sunday when they face table leaders Arsenal at the Emirates.
