José Fonte becomes assistant to Régis Le Bris at Sunderland

According to L'Équipe, José Fonte, 42, has become an assistant to Régis Le Bris at Sunderland, marking a swift move into coaching.

The club have not detailed his exact responsibilities within the backroom team. He was still with Casa Pia in Liga Nos last season, and was playing less than two months ago.

Le Bris led Sunderland to an impressive seventh in the Premier League last season. Fonte now strengthens the Frenchman's staff.

The 2016 European champion has 50 caps for Portugal and spent 2018 to 2023 with Lille.

He returns to England after spells with Crystal Palace from 2007 to 2010, Southampton from 2010 to 2017, and West Ham from 2017 to 2018. He has not previously worked directly with Le Bris.
