Liverpool’s First Setback Under Slot: Why Patience Matters With Konate

Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat at Selhurst Park on Saturday provided a sharp reminder that even champions can have off-days. After an opening run of seven straight wins in all competitions, Arne Slot’s men were finally undone by a Crystal Palace side that refused to settle for a draw. The result leaves Liverpool two points clear at the top of the Premier League but also sparks conversations about individual performances and the importance of perspective in what remains an early stage of the season.

Credit goes to David Lynch, speaking to Dave Davis for Anfield Index, whose observations on Ibrahima Konate’s display have struck a chord among fans. Lynch’s measured analysis sheds light on the challenges of judging players in the heat of a single defeat, particularly when contract negotiations loom in the background.

Konate Under The Spotlight

Much of the post-match chatter has focused on Konate’s performance, with some supporters quick to judge the French defender. Lynch offered a far more balanced view.

“I thought he was very, very poor in the first half but I didn’t think he was poor in the second half. So again, nobody played well in the first half except Alisson.”

That opening 45 minutes was undoubtedly tough to watch. Liverpool were second best across the pitch and the defensive line looked exposed.

“Liverpool were getting overrun in the first half in a way that makes it very hard for central defenders.”

Such insight highlights that central defenders often become scapegoats when a team’s midfield or system falters. The entire structure buckled early on, leaving Konate with limited support against Palace’s swift counters.

Contract Talk And Fan Reactions

Konate’s contract uncertainty has only amplified the scrutiny. Lynch captured this dynamic with striking clarity.

“There’s this desparation with Konate, because of his contract situation, that as soon as he shows any slight weakness then people feel the need to jump right on top of him.”

“If he does sign a new contract, will people feel embarrased and regret being so harsh?”

For many supporters, the anxiety over potentially losing a key defender seems to be colouring reactions to his form. Lynch urged fans to maintain perspective.

“If supporters want to spend this entire season having to emotionally protect themselves about him potentially leaving, then you’re not going to enjoy this season.”

It is a timely reminder that emotional turbulence in the stands often clouds fair assessments on the pitch.

Tactical Shifts And A Late Twist

Liverpool’s improvement after the interval did not happen by chance. Lynch pinpointed a tactical adjustment that changed the flow of the match.

“It was no coincedence that as soon as the system changes that he plays well and so does the rest of the team.”

Federico Chiesa’s 87th-minute equaliser appeared to salvage a point, only for Eddie Nketiah’s 97th-minute header to snatch victory for Palace. Konate had been substituted by that point, prompting Lynch to wonder aloud:

“Maybe Liverpool don’t concede that late goal if he is still on the pitch to head it away too.”

Looking Ahead To Chelsea

The defeat at Selhurst Park was a setback, but not a crisis. Slot’s side remain leaders of the Premier League and have shown they can respond strongly. With an away trip to Chelsea on Saturday, this will be a key test of their resilience.

Konate’s future remains unresolved but Lynch’s words provide context often lost in quick reactions. Football seasons are shaped by patience and adaptation, and Liverpool’s fans would do well to remember that before passing judgement too quickly on any individual.
