Bayern Munich had serious interest in signing Raheem Sterling on deadline day and felt he could be a good back-up option according to Bundesliga expert Christian Falk.

Sterling was available for sale all summer, but for one reason or another he remained at Stamford Bridge despite being surplus to requirements.

The 30-year-old’s career has been on a steady decline since joining from Manchester City for £50m back in the summer of 2022.

Sterling had a poor loan spell at Arsenal last season where he managed just one goal in 28 appearances in all competitions.

Chelsea were hoping to get £20m for the winger, and Sterling was said to have had interest from five clubs, but his preference to remain in London made a move difficult.

The Blues received no offers on deadline day, but it was reported Bayern Munich made a late enquiry for Sterling, and Falk has now provided further information on that.

“It’s true that Bayern also wanted to sign Raheem Sterling on deadline day, and this was perhaps the biggest surprise in this transfer market,” he wrote in his latest CF Bayern Insider column.

“You can see how nervous Bayern Munich was on the deadline day, in terms of whether or not they could get Nicolas Jackson.

“So there was the idea that, if you don’t get the one Chelsea player you’re after, perhaps you take another one.”

England winger wasn’t interested in move

Sterling made it clear his preference was to remain in London and Falk added he wasn’t interested in a move to the German champions.

“Sterling, of course, is a really big name, and everybody know he has quality. Everyone also knows that he has problems at the moment at Chelsea.

“Either way, Bayern Munich said he could be a good backup option.

“Perhaps they could get a big name even more cheaply. But, as we heard, Raheem Sterling made it clear he wasn’t interested in this transfer.

“So it was a topic, but in the end, it was clear that there would be no chance. So, a deal for Nicolas Jackson had to work.”
