Barcelona have been hit with fresh concerns over Gavi’s fitness, as the midfielder’s knee problem appears to be worse than first thought.

According to Catalunya Radio, the youngster may even need surgery, which would come as another major setback after already spending almost a year on the sidelines.

Gavi has been dealing with discomfort in his right knee, the same one where he previously underwent surgery after tearing his cruciate ligament in 2023.

While the ligament itself is reported to be in perfect condition, recent pain suggests the issue is linked to his meniscus.

So what now?

This has forced Barcelona’s medical staff to schedule a detailed check-up, which will take place on Monday, which is today.

The outcome of that examination will decide the next steps for the player’s recovery.

The injury rules Gavi out of Barcelona’s upcoming clash against Valencia, adding to Hansi Flick’s selection headaches.

Fans are now waiting anxiously for clarity, as any setback involving the 20-year-old is a huge blow to the squad’s balance in midfield.

Possible treatment

At this point, no option has been ruled out. The club may decide to continue with conservative treatment, giving Gavi more rest and recovery time in hopes that the pain fades away naturally.

However, if the problem does not improve, arthroscopic surgery could be required to clean the affected area in the knee.

Importantly, this procedure would not affect his cruciate ligament, which remains stable.

Barcelona in no rush

The main focus for Barcelona is to ensure Gavi returns at full strength, without rushing his comeback.

Losing him again for a long stretch would be a massive setback, especially given his importance in linking defence and attack.

Fans are hopeful that the upcoming tests bring positive news, but for now, there remains real concern at the club.
