Kaio César reflected on a careful comeback from injury as Corinthians beat Peñarol 2-0 in the Copa Libertadores, saying his minutes are building under Fernando Diniz.

"I am very happy to be back. Unfortunately, when I arrived I had injuries that stopped me getting a run, but I believe that now, with coach Diniz, I can have that continuity. He has helped me a lot," he told ESPN.

The No 37 had recovered from a right hamstring injury sustained against Santos on 15 March in the Campeonato Brasileiro. He returned in the draw with Vitória on 18 April and has been eased in to regain rhythm and confidence.

Against Peñarol, he came on 15 minutes into the second half and was busy in attack. "In this game he asked me to stay wider, but I get a bit restless when I am static, so we spoke about my positioning. I am happy to have come on, helped in some way and contributed to today’s win."

The result made it three wins from three in Group E, keeping Corinthians perfect and moving them closer to the last 16. They lead on nine points, with Platense on six and Peñarol and Independiente Santa Fe one apiece.

Corinthians now turn to the Campeonato Brasileiro, visiting Mirassol on Sunday at 20:30 at Estádio José Maria de Campos Maia for the 14th round.
