Former Liverpool star takes aim at Alexander Isak amid recent struggles

When Liverpool completed the £125 million signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United on deadline day, few could ignore the noise surrounding the deal.

It was a statement of intent from Arne Slot’s Premier League champions, but one clouded by controversy.

The Swedish striker’s refusal to train and his absence from pre-season matches left a bitter taste for many, not least former Liverpool defender Markus Babbel, who spoke exclusively to Anfield Index about his views on the transfer.

Isak’s ‘Difficult Move’

“It was a very difficult move. I always have problems if you have a contract with another club and then you don’t come anymore because you want to leave,” said Babbel.

Babbel comes from a generation where players honoured their commitments.

“That’s not my mentality. That club did a lot for you, so you have to give something back.”

Times have changed since Babbel’s playing days. Most former players share the view that these actions can be disrespectful, but it’s happening more and more frequently.

Just look at Marc Guehi. Played his part and gave his full respect to Crystal Palace, but was robbed of his dream move at the last moment. That’s why players do it.

“Of course you can say you want to go to Liverpool, but you still train and play your football,” said Babbel.

In his eyes, there is a right way to leave a club, and refusing to play crosses that line.

“Maybe it’s Karma”

Since arriving at Anfield, Isak has endured a challenging start. One goal and one assist hardly justify the price tag, and a groin injury suffered during Liverpool’s 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt will now keep him out for several weeks.

“It’s not my style of character. I cross my fingers that he performs for Liverpool, but maybe it’s karma,” claimed Babbel.
