Kieran Trippier is set for a Wolves medical next week as the club aims to complete their first signing of the summer. According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 35-year-old will undergo tests after his post-season holiday, a step towards concluding the move.
Talks began last month after Newcastle confirmed his departure at the end of his contract. Head coach Rob Edwards and chairman Nathan Shi were central to persuading him, and he told Wolves last week he wanted to join.
A two-year agreement, with an option of a third, is in place for the defender, who turns 36 in September, after Wolves saw off interest from clubs at home and abroad. He is expected to sign following the medical.
Trippier is set to contest the right-back spot with 19-year-old Pedro Lima, who will also have the chance to learn from him. Lima returned from a loan at Porto in January and, despite several offers including from Championship sides, Edwards kept him with the first team and gave him 10 outings in the run-in.
Those included Premier League starts against Spurs, Sunderland and Brighton. Edwards has outlined plans to play a back four next season, with Trippier and Lima the senior options at right-back.
Jackson Tchatchoua and Ki-Jana Hoever are likely to move on, while Rodrigo Gomes is expected to operate higher up the pitch. News of Trippier’s impending arrival has largely been welcomed by supporters who see his experience and leadership as vital for the summer rebuild.
