The Bundesliga top match between Hamburger SV and FC Bayern Munich is just over an hour away. On Saturday evening, the record champions return to the Volksparkstadion for the first time since 2017. Vincent Kompany wants to show a reaction with this team after the recent defeat in the league.
The Bayern coach makes five changes to his starting XI compared to the Champions League game in Eindhoven. Manuel Neuer starts in goal this time in place of Jonas Urbig. Josip Stanišić replaces Hiroki Ito on the right in the back four, while Minjae Kim forms the centre-back duo with Dayot Upamecano. Alphonso Davies once again takes up the left side of defence.
In midfield, the double-six of Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović remains unchanged. Kompany also makes changes in attack: Serge Gnabry and Michael Olise start in the attacking three, while Lennart Karl is again preferred in the center behind Harry Kane. Jamal Musiala, Luis Díaz and Nicolas Jackson initially take their places on the bench.
FC Bayern will still be without Konrad Laimer and Raphaël Guerreiro is also unavailable. „It’s all about having the squad fully available at the right time,“ explained Kompany ahead of the game with a view to the heavy workload in the coming weeks.
Hamburger SV go into the game with mixed fortunes. The Hanseatic side have been without a win for five games and recently failed to get past FC St. Pauli in the city derby with a goalless draw. Despite their great defensive resolve, they are still struggling in attack and Alexander Rössing-Lelesiit, an important player, is missing for the long term.
Bayern will not travel to the north without pressure either. Last matchday, the Munich side conceded their first Bundesliga defeat of the season in a 2-1 loss to Augsburg. The heavy workload of recent weeks was palpable – not least in view of the tight schedule in the Bundesliga and Champions League.
