A late 2-0 win for Borussia Dortmund over VfB Stuttgart delighted Niko Kovač, but the BVB coach confessed it wasn't the easiest watch from the sidelines.
“We saw a game characterized by both teams' determination not to lose. We wanted to secure second place. Stuttgart wanted to pull away," he told Sky Germany after the game.
"Accordingly, it certainly wasn't a spectacle. The first half wasn't easy. We weren't winning our challenges. And if you can't win challenges and second balls, then you don't have possession.
“When we did have it, we lost it immediately. In the second half, we defended much better and waited for our opportunity. Our last two attacks then contributed to a positive outcome for us,” he added.
Defensive stalwart Nico Schlotterbeck shared a similar line of thought, even confessing that Dortmund were somewhat fortunate to leave the MHP Arena with the win.
“Stuttgart really pushed us back. In the 90th minute, we took advantage of the two chances we had and won with a bit of luck," the 26-year-old explained to Sky Germany.
“That's been the case all season, we're playing with that mentality. We kept another clean sheet, and that in Stuttgart, where hardly any other teams have managed that,” he explained.
