Kwasniok ‘to leave’ Waldschmidt out of Köln squad for Heidenheim

Sky Germany reports that 1. FC Köln head coach Lukas Kwasniok has decided to leave Luca Waldschmidt out of the squad for this weekend’s Bundesliga game against 1. FC Heidenheim.

Waldschmidt recently voiced frustration about limited playing time. The report adds he was told of the decision in a meeting with Kwasniok and sporting director Thomas Kessler. The fixture is Köln’s first Bundesliga match of 2026.

His omission is described as being driven more by differing expectations over how the 29-year-old fulfils his role on the pitch than as a reaction to those remarks.

The forward has three goals and two assists in 12 appearances this season, starting six matches.

Update, Express.de states that Dominique Heintz will not be in the squad either after a knock in the final training session before the game.
