Real Madrid team-mates Kylian Mbappé and Eduardo Camavinga, alongside the Brazilian federation, have moved to support Vinicius after racist abuse from Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni.
The Brazilian had just scored a superb top-corner winner in a 1-0 victory at Benfica in Tuesday’s Champions League play-off first leg. Soon after the opener, Prestianni directed racist insults at him and referee François Letexier halted play for nearly 10 minutes.
Camavinga said Madrid had reached their first objective on the night, but stressed some things are not football. He called the behaviour towards a fellow professional inappropriate and insisted there must be zero tolerance.
In a statement, the Brazilian federation described racism as a crime that is unacceptable anywhere and has no place in football. It praised Vinicius for activating the protocol, calling his action courageous and dignified, and pledged to remain steadfast against discrimination.
Mbappé reacted during the match, using an expletive while labelling Prestianni a racist. He later posted a tweet urging Vinicius not to stop and saying others would not dictate what they do, then reiterated his anger in the mixed zone and firmly condemned the Argentine’s words.
