Kylian Mbappé, France’s captain, opened the scoring against Senegal on Tuesday in their 2026 World Cup opener, drawing level as the nation’s joint all-time top scorer on 57.
France laboured before the break, attempting only one shot, a record. As reported by L'Équipe.
The game quickened after half-time, Mbappé was denied a penalty before finally breaking the deadlock on 68 minutes, netting Les Bleus’ first goal of the tournament.
Moments earlier he had been a fraction short of turning in a fine Michael Olise pass inside the box.
Soon after, Olise found him in space and the Real Madrid forward drove a right-foot finish across Édouard Mendy.
