The tension between Real Madrid and La Liga has once again taken centre stage, and this time Javier Tebas has found himself forced into a defensive corner after Florentino Perez delivered a forceful message during the club’s General Assembly.
The Real Madrid president has never shied away from criticising the direction in which Spanish football is heading, and his latest intervention appears to have struck a nerve in the La Liga offices.
Tebas was quick to issue an immediate reaction, though it became clear from the tone of his comments that Perez’s remarks had unsettled him more than he wished to show publicly.
Before launching into his rebuttal, Tebas tried to frame the Real Madrid president’s words as part of a familiar pattern.
As he opened his response on social media, he referred directly to Perez’s past declarations, attempting to paint him as repetitive rather than visionary.
“Florentino is back on the pulpit. Florentino, the same man who in 2021, on El Chiringuito, solemnly warned that ‘football is seriously ill economically’ and that only his Super League could save it.”
Instead of addressing the concerns raised by Perez about the governance of Spanish football, Tebas shifted towards personal criticism.
He followed up with another emotionally charged message, again attempting to undermine the Real Madrid president’s credibility rather than engage in constructive debate.
“Today he has once again attacked all institutions, including La Liga, in a clearly messianic, sectarian, supremacist tone, as if he were the sole possessor of the truth.
“Anyway, it was to be expected. Every year he outdoes himself. It must be due to the frustration of the few who follow him,” Tebas continued.
Rather than providing clarity or addressing the genuine concerns raised by Real Madrid, Tebas hinted at a longer response still to come, suggesting that he needed more time to gather his arguments.
“Over the next few hours, I will respond, point by point, to his criticisms: some are false, others are distorted, and others do not tell the whole truth about what is really at stake in Spanish and European football,”
For now, the football world waits to see whether Tebas will offer genuine explanations or continue deflecting, while Real Madrid once again position itself as the club willing to challenge the status quo for the future of the sport.
