Lazio have lost the services of Patric for the remainder of the campaign after being forced to go under the knife.
The Spaniard has been dealing with a recurring ankle issue since November, so he’s been in and out of the squad ever since. Following a medical consultation in Barcelona, it was suggested that the 31-year-old may be able to avoid surgery by undergoing alternative therapy coupled with a lighter schedule.
So in the last few weeks, Patric made his return to the pitch, collecting two cameos in Serie A against Udinese and Milan, while also appearing in both Europa League fixtures against Viktoria Plzen, including one as a starter.
However, the defender’s attempts to avoid surgery proved futile, as the persisting pain eventually forced his hand. Patric thus announced undergoing surgical intervention to repair his damaged ankle once and for all, while promising Lazio fans to return stronger than ever through a message posted on his social media account.
Dear Lazio fans, this message is for you. I owe you an explanation. Many things have been said in the past few months, but I want to assure you that I have always given my all, fighting until the end, to return to doing what I love most: playing football. In November, during the match against Como, I felt a strong pain in my ankle. Thinking that it was nothing serious, I continued to play for a month and a half, helping myself with anti-inflammatories and infiltrations. But in the end, that same ankle made me realize I could no longer go on.
The Barcelona native also explained that when faced with two options, he picked the one that allowed him to remain active, but it ultimately backfired.
After undergoing some tests, the diagnosis arrived: longitudinal lesion (split) peroneus brevis. At that point I had two options: to have surgery immediately or try the conservative therapy route. Without hesitation, I chose the second option, to avoid missing the rest of the season. In the last two months, I have done everything possible, and more, to return to top form. I hoped until the end to be able to continue fighting with you and offer my contribution. But despite all my efforts, my ankle didn’t heal. I would have liked to be there again, but the pain and instability forced me to make a decision that I never wanted to consider: to undergo surgery. Now a new journey begins. I will work every day to come back stronger than ever.
Although losing Patric is a blow for Lazio, the management deserves some props for being proactive when sensing the danger and signing a direct replacement in Oliver Provstgaard. The 21-year-old Dane was supposed to join next season, but his arrival was brought forward just in case something went awry.
Mario Gila and Alessio Romagnoli remain Marco Baroni’s main choices at centre-back, while Samuel Gigot is the first alternative. As for Provstgaard, he’s still waiting to make his club debut, but this might come sooner than expected with Patric out of the picture.
