Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani confirmed that Alfonso Pedraza has already signed a pre-contract agreement to join the club, while Diogo Leite could soon follow suit.
The Biancocelesti signed five new players during the winter transfer window, and three of them were unveiled on Friday. But while Daniel Maldini, Edoardo Motta and Adrian Przyborek held their first press conference as Lazio players, it was Fabiani who stole the limelight while discussing a variety of topics (via La Lazio Siamo Noi).
The 64-year-old took the opportunity to confirm the signing of Pedraza, the 29-year-old Spanish left-back who will join the Aquile next summer as a free agent once his contract with Villarreal expires.
To complete the discussion on incoming transfers, there is also the deal already wrapped up, with Pedraza having signed his contract. In July he will wear the Lazio shirt.
Moreover, Lazio are close to inking a deal with 27-year-old Union Berlin defender Diogo Leite, who’s also running on an expiring contract. The left-footed Portuguese should effectively replace the wantaway Alessio Romagnoli, but his recent injury has put the deal on ice.
As for Diogo Leite, we followed him closely and spoke to him. He suffered an injury that will keep him out for six to seven weeks. There is a broad agreement in place with his lawyer. We’ll see in the very short term whether he also wants to commit himself to Lazio, as he was supposed to do before the end of the transfer window and before the injury.
Fabiani also revealed that Lazio had indeed tried to acquire the services of Davide Frattesi (albeit without naming him), but did not receive the green light from Inter Milan, who decided to keep the benchwarmer at Appiano Gentile.
I don’t think Lazio have weakened. I think they’ve brought in very good players. This is the 64th transfer window I’ve handled; there’s always a deal or two that unfortunately doesn’t go through. We had identified a player from Inter, and Lazio could have afforded a loan with an option to buy, but every club follows its own strategy. The important thing is not to do favors. We don’t do that here. We only sign players who fit the project. Then the pitch will have its say. Whatever has been done, has been done in good faith.
