Lazio ‘make contact’ with free agent Danilho Doekhi | OneFootball

Lazio have opened talks with free agent Danilho Doekhi after his Union Berlin exit, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Dutch centre-back has been available since the start of the month.

The Biancocelesti have sold Mario Gila to AC Milan, and Alessio Romagnoli is due to finalise a move to Al-Sadd in the coming days. Gennaro Gattuso therefore needs at least one centre-back to join Oliver Provstgaard, Patric and Samuel Gigot.

On Thursday, sporting director Angelo Fabiani travelled to Croatia to negotiate for 21-year-old Sergi Dominguez with Dinamo Zagreb. The gap between the clubs remains significant, so Lazio could pivot to alternatives.

They had reached an agreement in principle with Doekhi’s former Union Berlin partner Diogo Leite, who also left on a free, but an injury in the winter led the club to step back. The current priority is a right-footed centre-back to play alongside the left-footed defender expected to inherit Romagnoli’s starting role.

Rotterdam-born Doekhi, of Surinamese origin, joined Ajax’s academy in 2016, moved to Vitesse in 2018 and signed for Union Berlin in 2022 on a free transfer.
