Lazio midfielder Nicolo Rovella may have already played his last match this campaign after suffering a fractured collarbone in Sardinia.
It has been a nightmarish season for the 24-year-old, who was ruled out of action in September after struggling with a groin problem. The player wanted to avoid surgery at all costs, so he opted for an alternative therapy. However, his decision proved ill-advised, so he ended up going under the knife in November due to the lack of progress in his recovery path.
On Saturday, Rovella made his Serie A start in almost five months, but following a challenge from Cagliari right-back Ze Pedro, he fell awkwardly to the ground and wasn’t able to continue. It was later confirmed that the midfielder fractured his collarbone, and initial reports suggested he could be out of action for six weeks.

However, the latest reports in the Italian media have delivered more ominous news. According to Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Rovella’s recovery time could last between 60 and 90 days. Therefore, the Genoa youth product risks remaining on the sidelines for the rest of the season.
It should be noted that the Italian international was already short on fitness after several months on the sidelines, so another lengthy spell on the treatment table will take further toll on his physical condition. Hence, even if Rovella gets clinically cleared before the end of the season, he might struggle to find his best physical condition before the final round of the campaign.
